F6rm at The Isle of Wight College are celebrating with the news that six of the students who entered the national Young Writers competition have been selected to have their poem published in ‘Poetry Matters – Poems from England’ to be released on 30 April.

The competition is held annually and is open to all secondary schools and colleges in England. The poetry was selected on the basis of perception, imagination, expression and good use of language. The Poems are:

All winners received a Certificate, and a copy of the book will be kept at the British Library and libraries across the UK and Republic of Ireland, providing a lasting record of their achievement. The competition is also held in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Young Writers editorial team will go on to select individual and school winners. The prizes for the best schools across the series will win £1000 first prize, 5 x £250 second prizes and 10 x £100 runners-up prizes. The best poet from each book will be awarded a £10 book token and 3 pupils from every book will feature on the cover of the book their work appears in.

Mathew McMillan (English Teacher) said “We are looking forward to receiving a copy of the book when it is released. It will be great to see the students’ work in print. I am really proud of the students and congratulate them all. To have six selected as outstanding is just fantastic!”
