Hayley Conway-Hughes

Hayley Conway Hughes

Teacher of sociology and psychology Hayley is married with two children, Herbie and Wynn. She used to sail the world with her husband on yacht deliveries which has given her privileged access to places that can only be reached by sea (no airports etc). She has lived on land for seven years and has moved to the Isle of Wight from Devon where she taught sociology and psychology for four years. Hayley says, ‘I am fascinated by people and culture; my unique experiences of the world have contributed to my sociological understanding’.

I studied Sociology (with psychology) in Bristol and completed a PGCE in FE at Cardiff University. I then went on to convert my PGCE to secondary teaching through Exeter University and have taught young people from year 7 to year 13. I love teaching and I have been a 6th form tutor throughout my teaching career. I really enjoy the development and progression of each tutee and try to give my students varied opportunities and experiences to enable them to find out about themselves while they are in my care.

I am fairly obsessed with anything old,; you will find me trawling second-hand, junk and charity shops; if it looks like it’s had a hard life then I’ve got to have it (my home pays homage to this obsession) and I love a bargain – David Dickinson eat your heart out. I read as often as possible and am particularly interested in true stories; ever the sociologist. I love music (old, new, borrowed and blue) anything goes really, especially live. I have played the violin and will be starting the cello very soon and, like Ruth, I was also the lead singer of the teachers’ band at my old school! When I have time I like to tinker around with a sewing machine; mostly to make things for my home but occasionally really dodgy clothes too…
