Further Mathematics

Mathematics is an involving and fascinating subject and a vital tool supporting the study of other subjects. Learning Mathematics means learning how to use it to solve problems. Mathematics can be used to describe and predict a diverse range of things for example, the way the economy works, the motion of planets, the speed of a chemical reaction, the behaviour of large group of people and the way decisions about managing a business can be supported are all better understood using maths.
Course Structure
The course follows the EdExcel Mathematics specification. The A-level consist of six units, three of which are completed in the first year comprising the AS Maths course.
| AS Unit Title and Description | Assessment Method and Weighting |
|---|---|
Unit FP1 (Further Pure 1)
| 1/3 of the AS level 1.5 hour exam (calculator) |
Unit FP2 (Further Pure 2)
| 1/3 of the AS level 1.5 hour exam (calculator) |
| Unit S1 / M1 / D1 (Statistics / Mechanics / Decision) | 1/3 of the AS level 1.5 hour exam (calculator) |
| A2 Unit Title and Description | Assessment Method and Weighting |
Unit FP3 (Further Pure 3)
| 1/3 of the A2 level 1.5 hour exam (calculator) |
| Two further units chosen from S1/S2D1/D2/M1/M2 | 1/3 of the A2 level 1.5 hour exam (calculator) (each unit) |
Course Content
Mathematics is the study of structure and provides the bedrock for getting to the heart of numbers, shapes, movement, data and relationships. Mathematics is, arguably, the single most useful and adaptable qualification to have, not to mention one of the most (if not the most) respected! Most of this course is quite abstract and algebraic so an enjoyment of maths for its own sake is crucial.
Throughout the course you will learn:
- To interpret and use mathematical data and symbols
- Organise data efficiently
- Formulate problems into mathematical terms and apply appropriate techniques of solution
Career Opportunities
Mathematics can lead you into almost any degree or employment field, for example, actuarial, accountancy, business and finance, surveying, engineering, information technology, environmental, education, and the sciences.
Entry Requirements
We would normally require candidates to have the standard sixth form entry criteria, including GCSE Mathematics to at least grade A or A*.
Costs
There are no specific costs incurred on this course but students are expected to come fully prepared for lessons with writing equipment, normal maths resources such as a scientific calculator, geometry set etc. Students will be issued course books which are to be returned after completion of the course.
