Film Studies
Film Studies is now a major art form and will enrich your existing appreciation and enjoyment of film. It is a well-established academic subject which will deepen your understanding of how films communicate meaning and entertain us, their social context and the industry that produces them. You will explore film in the context of its culture and society, how it communicates ideas through images and sounds, and the processes involved in producing and distributing films to a wide audience.
Course Content
The topics you may study from are: film form and style, film industry – how it has developed; cinematic techniques – ‘panning’ and ‘tracking’ shots with editing and special effects; British cinema and a close study of films.
What Will I Learn?
You will learn to analyse sequences of different films followed by essays and criticism of the pieces you have seen. For the coursework you produce work in the form of a screenplay, film criticism, film or video. You will be expected to take an active interest in film outside the classroom and be able to talk about it knowledgeably and critically. You will use the same critical skills that are used when studying subjects like English Literature.
Entry Requirements
We would normally require candidates to have the standard sixth form entry requirements including GCSE English Language to at least grade C.
Career Opportunities
The film industry is very competitive so you should be prepared to work freelance. There are opportunities in journalism and publishing. Other jobs available are production assistants/co-ordinators, assistant directors, camera operators/cinematographers, researchers, film set designers and script writers. Skills acquired transfer easily for careers in marketing, business, finance and management.
