English Language

Language is essential to our daily lives. It helps us to understand who we are, and what others might think of us; it is how we express thoughts and feelings; it even shapes our view of the world. Discover how and why language is used differently by different writers and speakers – and by the same writer or speaker in different situations – and how it has changed over time. You will improve your communication skills and gain the skills to analyse and evaluate written and spoken English.
Course Content
English language is a challenging discipline. Detailed study of grammar and word choice underpins the close study and analysis of texts for the writer’s techniques and intentions. We study a very wide range of texts, especially non-fiction. Later we look at social aspects of language; speech and writing; language variation, and the future of English.
What Will I Learn?
Improving your technical knowledge will make you a more accurate and effective communicator in both speech and writing (which is a skill valued by employers). You will realise that language changes, depending on context, audience and purpose, and will be able to identify the precise means of creating particular effects on readers or hearers.
Entry Requirements
We would normally require candidates to have the standard sixth form entry criteria including GCSE English Language at grade A or B.
Career Opportunities
The skills you will gain are relevant to a very wide range of careers. Professions which require specific linguistic expertise are publishing, journalism, public relations, advertising copywriting and technical authorship. Other types of work could be media, law, IT, management, personnel administration and marketing.
