Biology

Biologists learn how living things work, how they interact with one another and how they evolve. Studying biology will teach you to ask questions, make observations, evaluate evidence and solve problems. You will develop practical skills alongside an understanding of concepts and principles.

- AS Unit F211: Cells, Exchange and Transport (one exam, 30% of AS)
- AS Unit F212: Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health (one exam, 50% of AS)
- AS Unit F213: Practical Skills in Biology 1 (spread through the AS year, 20% of AS)
- A2 Unit F214: Communication, Homeostasis and Energy (one exam, 30% of A2)
- A2 Unit F215: Control, Genomes and Environment (one exam, 50% of A2)
- A2 Unit F216: Practical Skills in Biology 2 (spread through the A2 year, 20% of A2))
Course Content
This is a course which combines a study of core biological topics with consideration of some recent advances. It involves classroom-based theory lessons, lab practicals, and at least one field trip each year.

Career Opportunities
When combined with certain other A Levels, this course can lead to careers and university courses in medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, physiotherapy, midwifery, nursing, dentistry, and teaching, as well as many other vocations.
Entry Requirements
- A combination of at least C and B if studying Dual Science GCSE or Core/Additional Science GCSE.
- A combination of at least a C and B, including Biology and one other science, if studying separate science GCSEs.
- Applied Science GCSEs at A or B Grade and may be subject to an entry test.
- BTEC or National Award qualifications at Distinction level and may be subject to an entry test.
- Additionally a B or above in Maths GCSE will be required.
Costs
About £40 per year for compulsory fieldtrips. A library copy of the textbook is provided free of charge. Your own copy of the textbook or revision guide (optional) would cost you around £20.
